She served in the Women’s Army Corps and the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945. After the war, she became an executive secretary at St. Augustine’s University and was actively involved in the civil rights movement. In 1965, she became president of the Raleigh-Wake Chapter of the NAACP, promoting social justice and equality.
