Abernethy founded the Intimate Bookshop, which supported his literary endeavors. He faced accusations of Communist activity in the 1950s, leading to financial and personal challenges. Subsequently, he became a successful stockbroker in New York City, where he died, leaving behind a legacy in literature and journalism.
