He was the son of Yanagi Soetsu, a prominent figure in the Mingei (folk craft) movement. Yanagi was well-known for his research on French painter Georges Rouault. His mother was the vocalist Yanagi Kaneko, and he was married to Makiko, the fourth daughter of writer Nagai Kafu.
