Orde Charles Wingate was a British military officer born in Nainital on February 26, 1903. He served in the British Army from 1921 until his death on March 24, 1944, reaching the rank of Major-General. Wingate was notable for his role during the Arab Revolt in Palestine and the Second World War, where he established the Chindits, a special unit for jungle warfare in Burma. He died in an airplane crash while conducting an inspection.
