Oswald Mbuyiseni Mtshali, born on January 17, 1940, is a South African poet writing in Zulu and English. He studied at Columbia University and currently resides in Soweto. Before publishing his first book, Sounds of a Cowhide Drum in 1971, Mtshali worked as a messenger in Soweto. The collection won the Olive Schreiner Prize in 1974 and sparked considerable debate among liberal whites in South Africa. Following his success as a poet, he became an educator, serving as deputy head at Pace College and teaching at New York City College of Technology.
