He became the head of the Research and Communication Department at the National Museum of Denmark in 2003 and served as the museum director from May 15, 2008, until 2017. Madsen has been involved in the museum sector since 1982, holding various positions, including head of Vejle Museum and unit leader for Denmark's Middle Ages and Renaissance at the National Museum. He has received accolades including being Knight of the Order of Dannebrog.
