Phillip L. Clay is an accomplished professor of housing policy and city planning at MIT and previously served as Chancellor of the Institute. Born on May 17, 1946, he has held significant roles at MIT since 1975, including Associate Provost and Head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. A leader in U.S. housing policy, Clay has contributed to the National Housing Trust and Community Builders, Inc. Recognized as the highest ranking Black administrator in MIT's history, he also investigated admissions improprieties in 2007. Clay earned his educational credentials at the University of North Carolina and MIT.
