Pierina Scaramella was an Italian Jewish botanist and university professor, born on February 18, 1906, in Parma. She studied natural sciences at the University of Florence and began teaching in 1928. Due to racial laws under Mussolini, she was expelled from the university in 1938. Scaramella worked in a sugar factory during WWII, publishing research under her husband's name for safety. After the war, she returned to academia, eventually teaching plant physiology and pharmaceutical botany until 1981. She died in Urbania on November 5, 1996.
