Promode Dasgupta was an Indian Bengali communist politician born on July 13, 1910. He served as the first general secretary of the West Bengal branch of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from its inception in 1964 until his death in 1982. A member of the party's Politburo, Dasgupta was recognized as an organized leader rather than a candidate in elections. Under his leadership, the Left Front, led by CPI(M), won a resounding victory in the 1977 elections and remained a dominant political force in West Bengal for decades.
