His career included fieldwork in geological parties and expeditions (1956–1960), and he worked as a graduate student and researcher at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences from 1960 to 1968. He served as the head of a laboratory from 1968 to 1974 and became the deputy director in 1974.
