장발, also known as Thomas Chang, was a renowned South Korean Westerner painter, university professor, and diplomat born on April 3, 1901. He significantly impacted the South Korean art scene, particularly as the founding dean of the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University in 1946. A devout Roman Catholic, he dedicated himself to art education and theory more than creative work. After his brother, a former Prime Minister, lost power in a coup, Chang lived in the USA where he passed away on April 8, 2001.
