He commanded the 99th Zhytomyr Rifle Division of the 68th Army. Derzhan held the rank of Guard Colonel and received numerous honors including the Order of Lenin and multiple medals for his valor in combat. He was also recommended for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union by General-Major Nikolai Shkudunovich, the commander of the Belgrade 68th Corps.
