He was known as 'R P' in intellectual circles of Kolkata and was affectionately called 'Shantul' or 'Shantul Gupta' by close friends. Gupta was considered the last descendant of the Babu class of Kolkata from the 19th century, and he held a significant influence on literature and culture.
