Born on January 24, 1922, she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from Central College, Bangalore, where she ranked first at the University of Mysore. In 1943, she joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, as a research student in the Electrical Technology department, focusing on communications. Later, she became a professor and chaired the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering at IISc.
