She is trained as a social worker and worked as a social curator before completing her main studies at the University of Trondheim in 1980. She served as a lecturer, educational leader, and principal at the social academy in Trondheim. Reese was the leader of Trondheim SV, a city council member for eleven years, and held various leadership roles in local government and unions, including the leader of the Fellesorganisasjonen from 2002 to 2010.
