He commanded the W-class destroyer HMS Wanderer, where he played a crucial role in the destruction of three German U-boats. Whinney was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with two Bars for his bravery. After the war, he ascended to the rank of captain and served as Chief Staff Officer Intelligence during the Suez Crisis. In 1986, he published his memoirs titled The U-Boat Peril: an anti-submarine commanders War.
