René Felber was a Swiss politician affiliated with the Social Democratic Party (SP). He was educated as a primary teacher and served as the Neuchâtel cantonal council member from 1965 to 1976, and as a national council member from 1967 to 1981. He was also a member of the Neuchâtel government from 1981 to 1987. Felber was elected to the Federal Council of Switzerland on December 9, 1987, and focused on European integration during his tenure. He resigned on March 31, 1993, due to health issues. He was President of the Confederation in 1992 and Vice President in 1991.
