He held various academic positions, including associate professor at Yale, and later worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Setlow made significant contributions to understanding DNA repair mechanisms, particularly in relation to UV radiation and its effects on skin cancer, and was elected to several prestigious scientific academies.
