Ricky Byrdsong was an American college basketball coach and insurance executive, born on June 24, 1956. He made history as the first African American head coach of the Northwestern Wildcats men's basketball program, serving from 1993 to 1997. Byrdsong also coached at the University of Detroit Mercy from 1988 to 1993, with a career coaching record of 89–163. Tragically, he was shot during a racially motivated attack on July 2, 1999, and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
