Rie Kawakami is a wheelchair basketball player from Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, born on April 8, 1971. After being forced into a wheelchair due to spinal cord injury, she began playing basketball on the advice of a sports instructor. Kawakami represented Japan in three Paralympic Games: Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008, winning a bronze medal in Sydney. In recognition of her achievements despite her disabilities, she received the Hanawa Hokiichi Award in 2008 and the Saitama Prefectural Merit Award in 2000.
