Robert Everett Stevenson was an American oceanographer born on January 15, 1921, in Fullerton, California. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a B-17 navigator and participated in 29 missions over Europe. Later, he worked as a consultant for NASA's astronaut programs and had opportunities to fly in space but declined due to family health issues. He earned a Ph.D. in oceanography in 1954 and worked at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography until his retirement in 1988. He passed away on August 12, 2001.
