He served as Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs from 1949 to 1951, and held the position of British Ambassador to Belgium from 1963 to 1969 and to Denmark from 1956 to 1960. Barclay previously held British nationality and was active in diplomatic roles during a significant period of the 20th century until his passing on October 24, 1996.
