Romulus Vereș, known as 'The Man with the Hammer', was a Romanian serial killer born on January 23, 1929, in Cluj. Active in the 1970s, he was charged with five murders and attempted murders but was never imprisoned due to his diagnosed schizophrenia, which he attributed to the Devil. His crimes led to urban myths of up to 200 victims, though the real number was smaller. Vereș was institutionalized in 1976 at the Ștei psychiatric facility following a lengthy investigation that questioned 4,000 people.
