Roy Cole (1932 - 2012) was a prominent type designer who began his career at fourteen with an apprenticeship in a printing house in Bradford. After gaining experience as a compositor in the UK and Switzerland, he studied typography in Basel under Emil Ruder. He worked as a typographer and became a freelance book designer in 1981. Cole established his own type foundry, Roy Cole typography, in 2003, focusing on sans serif type families. He was also involved in student assessments for the Society of Typographic Designers during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
