Ruth Sager (February 7, 1918 – March 29, 1997) was an American geneticist known for her pioneering work in cytoplasmic inheritance. In the 1950s and 1960s, she discovered the transmission of genetic traits through chloroplast DNA, marking the first known instance of inheritance that does not involve the cell nucleus. Her contributions to genetics were not fully appreciated by the academic community until the second wave of feminism in the 1970s. In the early 1970s, she shifted her focus to cancer genetics, proposing roles for tumor-suppressor genes and conducting research in this area.
