He is a successor in the Sōtō lineage of Zen and continues the work of his master, Taisen Deshimaru, to adapt Japanese Zen for European practitioners. Kaisen emphasizes the practice of shikantaza (just sitting) meditation, focusing on the position of the body and breathing to achieve a natural state of body and mind. He teaches that this method leads to a state beyond life and death and encourages a direct transmission of understanding.
