He is a distinguished professor at the Earth-Life Science Institute at Tokyo Institute of Technology and a special professor at the Earth Material Science Research Center at Okayama University. In 1994, he introduced plume tectonics, hypothesizing deep mantle convection that reaches depths of 2,900 km, which significantly impacted geological sciences. He has held positions such as associate professor at the University of Tokyo and invited professor at Stanford University and has received several prestigious accolades.
