He hails from a musical family with roots dating back to the 19th century; both his grandfather Dimitris Semsis (Salonikios) and father Michalis Semsis were violinists, and his brother Dimitris is also a violin player. He began his music education at the age of five under his father's guidance and continued studies in London focusing on violin and viola at prestigious institutions. He plays viola in Elliniki Kamerata, founded by his father in the early 1980s.
