In his final years, Kolzak was in a long-term relationship with Paul Monette and dedicated himself to combating homophobia and AIDS-phobia in the entertainment industry. In recognition of his efforts, the GLAAD Stephen F. Kolzak Award was established in his honor, with him as its first posthumous recipient in 1991.
