Stephen William Semmes is an influential American mathematician known for his work in analysis. He earned his bachelor's degree from Armstrong State College in 1980 and completed his Ph.D. at Washington University in 1983 under Richard Rochberg. Semmes has held postdoctoral positions at the Mittag-Leffler Institute and Yale University before becoming a professor at Rice University in 1987, where he currently serves as the Noah Harding Professor of Mathematics. His research areas include harmonic analysis, complex function theory, partial differential equations, and differential geometry.
