As a graduate student at Yerkes Observatory, he collaborated with William Morgan and Donald Osterbrock, leading to the publication of observations that confirmed the spiral structure of the Milky Way. He worked at Mount Wilson Observatory and later joined the U.S. Naval Observatory's Flagstaff Station, where he cataloged H II regions in the Milky Way and published his findings in the Sharpless catalog, which included 313 nebulae in its final edition.
