He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana College and a Master of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago. Purser was instrumental in establishing art departments at multiple universities, including Ole Miss, where he nurtured a young self-taught painter, M.B. Mayfield. He authored several books and completed four murals during the New Deal, with his work showcased in the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
