Sylvia Walker (1937-2004) was a prominent disability rights activist and professor at Howard University. As a blind African American woman, she overcame significant barriers in her education and dedicated her career to combating ableism. She founded the Centre for Disability and Socioeconomic Policy Studies, previously overseeing the Howard University Research and Training Centre, aimed at empowering low-income disabled students. In 1995, she co-founded the American Association of People with Disabilities and served as vice-chair of the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities.
