Tansu Çiller, born on October 23, 1946, in Istanbul, is a prominent Turkish politician and economist who became the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Turkey. She entered politics in 1990 and was elected to Parliament in 1991. Çiller led the True Path Party and became Prime Minister from 1993 to 1996. Her government oversaw significant events including Turkey's customs union with the EU in 1995 and the Imia crisis with Greece in 1996. After a defeat in the 2002 elections, she withdrew from politics and is now a member of the global Women's Leadership Council.
