He was a student at Wilberforce University, where he participated in a student group led by Horace Henderson. McCord performed with the Blue Grass Buddies, McKinney's Cotton Pickers, and the Mills Blue Rhythm Band, and recorded alongside notable artists such as Louis Armstrong, King Carter, and Ollie Shepard.
