Vasily Semenovich Emelyanov (1901-1988) was a significant leader in the Soviet steel and atomic industries. Born in Chvalynsk, he contributed to the Red Army efforts during the Russian Civil War and later studied metallurgy at the Moscow Mining Academy. He worked as an engineer in Germany before heading the first Soviet electric steel plant. Emelyanov played a key role in tank production during WWII and later led the Soviet atomic agency. His contributions earned him several prestigious awards, and he was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
