Walter Battiss (1906–1982) was a South African artist and expert in Bushman painting, considered one of South Africa's first and most important abstract painters. His works, influenced by African art, express the power and mystery of Africa as well as the dignity of African people. Battiss is known for creating the concept of 'Fook Island', a utopian realm inspired by the islands he visited, where many notable South Africans held honorary citizenship, complete with passports.
