Walter H. Haas was an American amateur astronomer born on July 3, 1917. He began his astronomical observations in the 1930s and founded the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO) in 1947, leading it until the mid-1980s. He later served as an honorary president on the board of this organization. Haas received several awards for his contributions to astronomy, including the Astronomical League Award in 1952, the Amateur Achievement Award from the Pacific Astronomical Society in 1994, and the Presidential Award from the Astronomical League in 2004.
