He served as a professor and headed the speech department at the Boris Shchukin Higher Theatre School. An influential theorist, he established a school for stage speech and artistic reading. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1988. An inter-university competition of reciters in his name has been held since 1997.
