Yakov Mikhailovich Smolenskiy (also known as Yakov Moiseevich Liberman) was a prominent Soviet actor and theatrical educator born on February 28, 1920, in Petrograd and died on March 9, 1996, in Moscow. He served as a professor and headed the speech department at the Boris Shchukin Higher Theatre School. An influential theorist, he established a school for stage speech and artistic reading. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1988. An inter-university competition of reciters in his name has been held since 1997.
