Yōtarō Ōtani (February 16, 1931 - February 28, 2022) was a Japanese novelist and mystery writer, born in Higashi-Osaka, Osaka Prefecture. Initially aspiring to be a novelist due to his mother's influence, he shifted from conventional literature to writing mysteries post-World War II. He gained recognition with his novel 'The Performance of Murderous Intent' (1970), winning the Edogawa Rampo Prize. He created a detective named Police Inspector Yagisawa and was known for his suspense and travel-themed mysteries, contributing to the literary scene until his death at 91.
