Yusuke Sumiki (1901-1974) was a prominent Japanese agricultural chemist and a pioneer in antibiotic research. He served as a professor and later dean at the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Agriculture and as vice president of RIKEN. Notably, he succeeded in crystallizing gibberellin, a plant hormone, from the rice blast disease fungus in 1938 and discovered 'Blasticidin S,' the first antibiotic used as a pesticide in 1958. Sumiki's contributions significantly advanced agricultural chemistry and antibiotic applications.
