He is known for his numerous songs, many of which were recorded by other artists like Rolando Alarcón, Joan Baez, and Víctor Jara rather than by himself. Some of his compositions, such as 'Gallo rojo, gallo negro' and 'A la huelga', have become part of popular tradition. He was the son of writer Rafael Sánchez Mazas and was connected to prominent intellectual families, being the brother of writer Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio and uncle to journalist Máximo Pradera.
