Having performed over 16,000 heart surgeries, he has been recognized for his contributions to affordable healthcare. He received the Padma Shri award in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012, two of India's highest civilian honors. His life and work are featured in an episode of the Netflix series The Surgeon's Cut (episode 4).
