Hendrik August Scheltes, known as Henk Scheltes, was a Dutch journalist and cryptographer born in Amsterdam on February 25, 1921. He studied economics but did not complete his degree after being imprisoned in a German camp during the war. Scheltes worked at NRC from May 1, 1946, until 1982, eventually becoming the editor of the Saturday supplement where he introduced the 'Scryptogram'. He was a pioneer in the cryptography field, known for using concise descriptions and eliminating anagrams. His last work was published in May 1987.
